Chepstow U15s reach shield final

Abergavenny/Chepstow matches are always entertaining and this one was no exception - indeed it was another nailbiting affair to match the U11 semi final with Llanarth. Aber were put into bat by Scriv, and Ben made the intial breakthrough thanks to a great catch by Pinchy in the covers. Morgans Bevans looked pretty secure but then needlessly took a dodgy run, and some alert fielding from Keegan saw a run out. A wicket each for Matteo and Kameel and we restricted them to 98 for 4. Pick of the bowlers was Ben with 1 for 8 off 4 whilst Matteo bowled his 4 overs for eighteen runs.

A quick start - 4 off the first ball from Scriv, then 10 from 2 overs
and then disaster - Scriv out for 6 and Ben for one. Not what the doctor
ordered and all the pressure was on Matteo to grind out a good score;
slowly he and Chris nudged the score up to 40 before Chris was harshly given out lbw. Joe with a breezy 13 saw he and Matteo add a further 28
runs, but when Matteo was run out on 78 we were 5 wickets down with 5 overs left. Keegan came and went for 2 leaving Pinchy and Louis to take us over the line, but after scoring 12 runs Pinchy decided to make a game of it and was bowled - 96 for 7 with 10 balls left and Kameel and
Louis our two left handers at the crease - no need to worry - two needed from the last over - bye off the first ball then two dots balls -
pressure mounting but then a steer past point for the winning run from
Louis. Phew - another side through to the Shield finals; the pressure is
on the 13s to deliver against Ebbw Vale next week to make it three out
of three!

Under 11s reach shield final!

Thanks very much to everyone who came out on another warm evening at Chepstow to watch the U11s battle with Llanarth for a place in the MBS Shield Final. Both teams played to an amazing standard for this age-group, with hardly any wides, a lot of really testing bowling and generally excellent fielding, and in these conditions, on a dry, demanding wicket, batsmen had to rely on their judgement, patience and technique. A spectator pointed out on leaving that you'd normally pay £30 to watch a game like this.

Happily, Chepstow won by 5 runs, posting 90 for 3, with Llanarth scoring 85 for 3 in reply. Filip top-scored for Chepstow, batting all 20 overs for 34 not out, with support from Charlie (14) and Harry H (6 not out). Skipper James and Filip then opened with 6 tight attacking overs, 4 maidens, 1 for 2, putting Llanarth under huge run pressure from which they never recovered, despite a brave attempt to get the 24 needed from the last over. Filip finished with 2 for 3 from four overs, the support bowling from Bruno, Charlie, Mariam and Max maintained the standard, with just four wides and two no-balls in the whole innings. Luke made countless brilliant stops and takes behind the stumps as the ball bounced up or died.

Huge congratulations to the whole team, and special thanks to George, Harry T and Will T, who didn't get a chance to bat or bowl, but stayed on it in the field throughout on a day when one bad misfield could have made the difference. The final is at Monmouth on Sunday August 27th.

Chepstow Cricket Club Junior Section

There is a thriving juniors section with some 150 children over the age of 6, the oldest of whom play in the various adult teams while the younger ones receive coaching and play matches in their age groups. The U15's and U13As teams will play proper cricket whilst the U13Bs and U11A and U11Bs will play pairs cricket in their respective leagues.  For those aspiring cricketers not quite ready for hard ball cricket it is hoped that a softball mini league will be started in 2015 within Monmouthshire and Gwent.  Any boy or girl under the age of 11 who would like to play cricket is more than welcome to attend softball cricket which will commence in the summer on Monday evenings from 6:15pm to 7:15pm.  Any boy or girl who would like to join the U13 and U15 squads should contact Colts Coordinator Francis Tindall on 01291621528.  He will advise the evenings on which they train during the season.
